Two walks through Venice

Hotel Rigel suggests to its guests two itineraries among the very many possible among the calli and campi of Venice. Far from being exhaustive, these itineraries are essentially walks that a Venetian might suggest to a close friend who comes to visit and wants to get a taste of what he or she may encounter and see in any corner of Venice's magical historic center. Enjoy your walk. G. Serafini

Passeggiata Per Venezia

Reach the landing si santa Maria Elisabetta and board the Vaporetto line 1. Get off at the San Zaccaria stop and head to the nearby church of the same name .

Continue across the bridge of San Provolo to Campo dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo and from there take Calle Rimpeto la Sacrestia to Ponte Storto and cross it into Via Ruga Giuffa turning left.

Going down Ruga Giuffa you will see on your right the entrance to Palazzo Grimani which is certainly worth a stop.

Continuing in the same direction, you will enter the beautiful Campo di Santa Maria Formosa and from there through Calle lunga Santa Maria Formosa head towards Campo San Giovanni e Paolo where you can admire the church of the same name and the splendid facade of the Scuola Grande di San Marco (now the Ospedale Civile).

Cross the Horse Bridge and continue in a straight line to Campo Santa Maria Nova from where you can admire the small but beautiful Renaissance facade of the Church of Miracles .

Continue across the Campo San Canzian and the bridge of the same name to the Campo dei Santi Apostoli and from there take the Strada Nuova to the San Felice Bridge after which you will turn into the fondamenta of the same name, walking all the way to the Scuola Grande della Misericordia

Leave the Scuola on your left and along the fondamenta of the same name you will reach the Campo dell'Abazia .

Exit the campo across the fondamenta of the same name, cross the Ponte dei Muti and through the Calle dei Muti and then the Fondamenta dei Mori you arrive at Tintoretto's house and then continue to the campo and the church of Madonna dell'Orto, which contains magnificent canvases of the painter as well as his tomb inside.

Continue along a section of the Fondamenta di Madonna dell'Orto to the Loredan bridge, cross it and continue until you enter the Fondamenta della Sensa and then continue on your right to the Malvasia bridge.

Cross the bridge and continue in front of you until you enter the Fondamenta degli Ormesini (also in that fondamente you can find 2 excellent restaurants: one "Al Timon" specialized in meat and the other "Il Paradiso perduto" specialized in fish), turn to your right and continue until the Ponte del Gheto novo.

Visit the old Jewish Ghetto (*) and in leaving it do not miss the opportunity to buy typical sweets of the Venetian-Jewish tradition from the Giovanni Volpe bakery (legendary, for lovers the Impade and the Mandorle).

Leaving the Ghetto through Calle del Ghetto Vecchio walk on your left along the Fondamenta di Cannaregio to the Ponte delle Guglie and cross it to reach first the Santa Lucia train station and then across the brand new glass bridge by arch. Calatrava Piazzale Roma (*).

From Piazzale Roma you can decide to return to Lido by vaporetto via three different routes:

Line 1, which runs all along the Grand Canal and the San Marco basin (About 1 hour long). Click here for the schedule

Line 5.1 which runs through the Giudecca Canal (lasting about 1 hour). Click here for the timetable

The 5.2 line that will take you to your destination through the North Lagoon ( lasting about 50 minutes). Click here for schedules

Notes: the itinerary is hardly feasible in a single day if you wanted to visit all the spaces and monuments mentioned, not to mention as many I have neglected to indicate but which would still deserve your attention. So I leave it to you to choose what to see and what to reserve for a visit the next day or on your new city vacation.

Along the route there are numerous landings indicated with an asterisk in parentheses (*), from which you can embark to skip a few sections or return to the Lido.
