Together with the Venice Carnival, the Redentore, which will be celebrated on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 July this year, is one of the most spectacular events to be seen in Venice and at least once in your life it is an absolute must to take part in the magic atmosphere surrounding it: either aboard one of the thousands of boats thronging the Giudecca Canal, so that they seem to create a sort of floating platform, or watching from the quaysides where the Venetians organise real banquets, everyone will be able to take part and feel they are Venetians too, for a day.
It originated as a religious festival to celebrate the Church of the Redentore, which was built to thank God for having saved the city from the terrible plague in 1575, during which over a third of the population lost their lives.
Ever since, each year a bridge of boats is created across the Giudecca Canal, linking the island with the Zattere. In the evening one of the most incredible firework shows in the world takes place, illuminating the Basin of Saint Mark's and making Venice, if possible, even more marvellous.
Hotel Rigel offers its guests the possibility of spending the evening of the Redentore in a boat, with dinner aboard and watching the fireworks from a perfect position.
