This is a “non-competitive” rowing regatta that takes place in Venice in the month of May.
Its origins go back to a regatta that took place on November 11th 1974 amongst a group of Venetians, both amateurs and professionals, who decided to establish a regatta for all the lovers of Venetian rowing, i.e. standing up, to revive this ancient tradition.
On January 26th 1975 this idea actually became fact with an official announcement that the Vogalonga was to be established, introducing it to the local inhabitants and press and promoted by a specifically designated committee. Around 30 km long, the course was studied so it would pass the most important, central places in Venice, such as the Basin of Saint Mark’s, and the Grand Canal, and also reach the surrounding areas including the islands of Burano and Murano, before returning to Venice via the Canale di Cannaregio, which leads to the Grand Canal, and ending in front of the Punta della Salute.
The first Vogalonga took place on May 8th 1975, the day of the “Sensa”, when all the boats gathered in front of the Doges Palace, waiting for the cannon blast that marked the beginning of the race.
Participation in the Vogalonga has never stopped growing, and in 2008 over 1,600 boats and 6,000 rowers enrolled, coming from all over the world and in rowing boats of all kinds.
